随着社会的发展，包装已经成为人们的生活和世界贸易往来不可缺少的重要部分，它不仅推动着相关工业的发展，而且繁荣了市场，美化了人们的生活，所以越来越受到人们的关注。然而，包装业的繁荣也加速了资源，能源的消耗，并对地球的生态平衡造成了很大破坏。特别是包装设计的过度商业化，使设计成了鼓励人们无节制消费的重要介质。因此，不少设计师转向从深层次上探索设计与人类可持续发展的关机，力图通过设计活动，在人口-社会-环境之间建立起一种协调发展的机制，这标志着设计发展的一次重大转变。
